As the weather changes from summer to autumn, children become more susceptible to respiratory and digestive illnesses. Therefore, parents should pay special attention to nutrition and daily care to help maintain their child’s health.
Why Are Children More Likely to Get Sick During Seasonal Changes?
When the weather shifts from hot to cold and humidity rises, bacteria and viruses thrive. Young children—especially those under five—have immature immune systems, making them more prone to illnesses such as:
• Respiratory diseases: rhinitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, pertussis (whooping cough), measles…
• Digestive diseases: rotavirus diarrhea, intestinal infections, and digestive disorders caused by unhygienic food.
Warning Signs Parents Should Watch For:
• High fever above 38.5°C, persistent cough, rapid breathing, or chest retraction.
• Vomiting, frequent diarrhea, thirst, fatigue, refusal to breastfeed.
• Poor appetite, weight loss, excessive sleepiness, or irritability.
If your child shows any of these symptoms, do not self-medicate — take them to the nearest healthcare facility for timely examination and treatment.
How Can Parents Help Prevent Illness?
• Keep children warm properly: Dress them warmly, especially covering the neck, chest, and feet. Avoid sudden temperature changes between indoors and outdoors.
• Ensure proper nutrition: Provide a balanced diet, plenty of water, and fresh fruits and vegetables. For infants, maintain exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months.
• Maintain hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap. Keep the home clean, well-ventilated, and avoid exposure to cigarette or cooking smoke.
• Keep vaccinations up to date: Make sure your child receives all recommended vaccines against flu, measles, pertussis, pneumonia, rotavirus, and others as scheduled by the Ministry of Health.
