During the week of September 12–19, Hanoi recorded a continued increase in cases of dengue fever and hand-foot-mouth disease. Specifically:
- Dengue fever: 258 cases were reported across 81 communes and wards — an increase of 68 cases compared to the previous week. Since the beginning of the year, the city has recorded 1,884 cases, a decrease of about 42% compared to the same period last year. No deaths have been reported. Nineteen new outbreaks were detected, raising the total to 94, of which 33 are still active.
- Hand-foot-mouth disease: 189 cases were reported across 66 communes and wards — an increase of 43 cases compared to the previous week. The cumulative total since the beginning of the year is 4,346 cases, which is double the figure for the same period in 2024. Last week, three new community outbreaks were reported in Cổ Đô, Suối Hai, and Thạch Thất.
In addition to these two diseases, Hanoi also reported cases of measles (8 cases, a decrease compared to the previous week), whooping cough, and COVID-19, but no complicated new outbreaks or deaths.
Risks & Prevention Measures
- The Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC) has warned that insect indices in many outbreak areas have exceeded the high-risk threshold, creating favorable conditions for dengue to spread. Hand-foot-mouth disease is also expected to continue rising as preschool and primary school children return to class.
In the coming period, prevention measures will be strengthened, including: monitoring and handling outbreaks in areas such as Bát Tràng, Đại Thanh, Hồng Hà, Phú Xuyên, Mỹ Đức, and Hai Bà Trưng; health communication campaigns; larval elimination and mosquito spraying; and coordination with the veterinary sector to control diseases transmitted from animals to humans.
